Betenu Internet Mailing List Acceptable Use Policy

  1. announce@Betenu.org Scope: Messages to the list (announce@betenu.org) should be brief, timely and non-commercial announcements, of reasonably clear interest to a significant portion of the Betenu community.
  2. talk@betenu.org Scope: With the exception of material that should be sent to forwards@betenu.org (see below), any non-excluded message (see item 4) that does not fit the scope of announce@betenu.org will be accepted on the talk@betenu.org mailing list. This is especially true of messages that can reasonably be expected to inspire replies and discussion. If the sender wants to convey to a list some information from another source, a summary (with quotations limited to less than one line, in deference only to a particularly apt phrase) and a pointer toward further information is be the best way to pass the information along, or the material may be posted to the forwards@betenu.org list (see item 3). The quality of mail received by the lists depends entirely on the thoughtfulness of the senders.
  3. forwards@betenu.org Scope: Messages should not generally be forwarded from other sources to either announce@betenu.org or talk@betenu.org. The list forwards@betenu.org has been created specifically for distribution of these messages to those who want to see them. If you wish to discuss material posted here by yourself or others, the talk@betenu.org list is the place to do it, but please do not quote the entire article in your discussion; please limit inclusions, if any, to the relevant portions. The sender of any material to forwards@betenu.org is responsible for assuring that no copyrights are violated.
  4. Excluded Messages: Fraudulent or illegal messages, unsolicited commercial advertisements ("spam emails"), email petitions and chain letters, including any email that asks to be spread further, are not welcome, no matter how compelling the apparent cause. Similarly, virus spread is obviously not welcome on Betenu mailing lists; anyone who keeps the address of a Betenu mailing list in an address book is urged to keep an up-to-date anti-virus program running to protect the community. Email attachments are not welcome on talk@betenu.org or announce@betenu.org; they should be sent to any other Betenu mailing lists only by prior agreement (including disclosure of attachment size) from the recipients. As a practical matter, permission for attachments can be presumed for those under 100 kbytes in size to newsletter@betenu.org.
  5. Administrative Requests: Address updates, as well as requests to be added or removed from Betenu mailing lists should be sent to request@betenu.org.
  6. Notification: Notifications of this Betenu policy will be sent on a quarterly basis to both betenu-announce and betenu-talk. Courteous, but pointed notification of infractions of this policy will be sent by the list maintainers to the apparent violators on a timely basis, with message quality control provided by a courtesy copy to the rabbi and the president. Where appropriate, Internet Service Providers who are proximate cause to Internet entry of fraudulent emails will be sent formal complaints.
